I was born in 1940, and was educated at Tonbridge School and Selwyn College, Cambridge. I have spent most of my professional life in teaching, mainly at Christ's Hospital, the famous 450 year-old 'Blue-coat School', giving up a full time commitment there in 1987 in order to be able to devote more of my attention to painting and writing.

A love of churches and cathedrals was developed from my earliest years through family connections, and my time at Cambridge greatly deepened my love of historic buildings. Whilst there I took the often offered opportunity to hear the lectures of famous architectural historians, notably those by Professor Nicolaus Pevsner, who was then, fortunately for me, Slade Professor of Art. Since then I have, in particular, absorbed the work of the English Neo-Romantic painters, which I especially admire. I also have been much influenced by 19th and 20th century architectural prints, from Ackerman, Mallon, and Winkles through to such figures as Axel Haig and J. Alphage Brewer, which somehow I can no more resist collecting than books on historic churches and country houses.

My more recent work has been dominated by mixed media depictions of cathedrals, churches, country houses and historic sites both in the British Isles and Holland.

My interests largely centre on antiquarian pursuits, which include a fascination with oriental rugs, exploring old churches, museums and country houses. I have also written five books on historic pipe organs, and spend a good deal of my time as an organ case designer both at home and abroad, and as an organ consultant for English Heritage and the Chichester Diocese. I hugely enjoy listening to classical music, and relish good food and wine, especially in the company of my really good friends who appear to have tolerated me over the years.

I have shown my paintings widely in the south of England and in London, and usually have an exhibition of my work twice a year.

I accept commissions for my own speciality:- paintings of cathedrals, historic churches and houses, especially those connected with clients' family history.

You might, for instance, know in which church your great grandparents were married, or where your grandmother was buried, or in what country house your great uncle grew up, and wish me to paint for you the historic building in the British Isles, bound up with your family's past.
